In Sanskrit: samantabhadracarya pranidhana In Tibetan: 'phags-pa bzang-po spyod-pa'i smon-lam-gyi rgyal-po The Aspiration of Samantabhadra
With purity of body, speech, and mind, I bow to all the heroic Buddhas of the past, present, and future without exception in every world in all the ten directions.
By the power of this Aspiration of Samantabhadra, I bow with as many bodies as there are atoms in the pure lands of all those victorious buddhas manifest in my mind, and I pay homage to all of them.
I conceive the entire realm of truth to be completely filled with enlightened ones. On each atom I imagine there to be as many buddhas as atoms in the pure lands, each buddha surrounded by many bodhisattvas.
I honor all these blissful lords, praising their perfections with all the sounds of an ocean of varied melodies, an ocean of endless praise.
I offer to those heroic buddhas the finest flowers, garlands, music, and ointments, excellent canopies, choice lamps, and the best incense. I offer as well to those victorious ones the finest array of all excellent things, the finest robes and fragrances, and heaps of sweet smelling powers as high as Mt. Meru.
By the power of my faith in the deeds of Samantabhadra, I prostrate and present vast and unequalled offerings to each of the victorious buddhas. I confess every type of wrong that I have done in thought, word, or deed, under the influence of desire, anger, or ignorance.
I rejoice in the meritorious deeds of all the buddhas of the ten directions, the bodhisattvas, pratyeka buddhas, arhats, practioners, and all sentient beings.
I request the enlightened protectors who have attained the detachment of buddhahood and illumined the worlds of the ten directions to turn the peerless wheel of dharma.
With folded hands, I beseech those who intend to manifest the final nirvana, to remain for as many eons as there are atoms in all the pure lands, for the benefit and happiness of all living beings.
May whatever small amount of virtue I may have gained from prostrating, offering, confessing, rejoicing, requesting, and beseeching, be dedicated to attaining perfect enlightenment.
May I worship the buddhas of the past and those now present in the worlds of the ten directions; may those to come quickly fulfill their aspiration and reach buddhahood by traversing the stages of enlightenment.
May all the worlds of the ten directions become pure and filled with bodhisattvas and victorious buddhas who proceed to the royal tree of enlightenment.
May all living beings in the ten directions always be happy and free of sickness. May the display of the dharma be in hormony with the needs of all living beings and fulfill their hopes.
May I perform all the deeds of enlightenment and remember all my lives in all states of existence. And in all my lives, after death, migration, and rebirth, may I always embrace spiritual life.
May I follow all the victorious buddhas and perfect all the deeds of Samantabhadra. Pure in the immaculate deeds of morality, may my conduct always be flawless and without fault.
May I teach the dharma in every tongue, in whatever sounds are understood by living beings, in the language of the gods, nagas, demons, spirits, and human beings.
May I always diligently and patiently perform the perfections. May I never disregard my intention to attain enlightenment and completely remove whatever faults may obscure it.
Freed from karma, defilements, and actions of demons, as a lotus is unsoiled by the mire, so in every rebirth in the world may I proceed unhindered, like the sun and moon in a clear sky.
Throughout all the lands in all the directions, may the sufferings of the lower realms be completely relieved. Establishing beings in happiness, may I work for the benefit of all living beings.
Fully accomplishing the activities of enlightenment, may I work in harmony with the activities of all beings. May I practice and demonstrate the deeds of Samantabhadra, through all future eons.
May I associate with those whose activities are similar to mine. May we act alike in thought, word, and deed, and may our aspirations be as one.
May those friends who wish to help me, and also demonstrate the deeds of Samantabhadra, always meet me again, and may I never cause them pain.
May I always personally behold the victorious buddhas, those guardians surrounded by bodhisattvas. And without tiring, in all future eons, may I always present them magnificent offerings.
May I always uphold the buddhas' sacred dharma and illuminate the deeds of enlightenment. May I train in the practice of Samantabhadra in all future eons.
Through rebirth in all states of existence, may I gather endless stores of merit and wisdom. May I become an inexhaustible treasure of all virtues of method, wisdom, concentration, and liberation.
May I always behold as many pure lands as there are atoms present in each pure land, with inconceivable buddhas sitting in the midst of their bodhisattvas and performing the activities of enlightenment.
In this way may I be able to see everywhere, even on every mote of dust, countless buddhas of the past, present, and future, limitless pure lands, and endless eons.
May I always heed the pure speech of the victorious buddhas, which holds within each word the totality of the perfect dharma, and an ocean of words and languages precisely suited to the needs of all beings.
May I possess perfect intelligence so as to heed the endless melody of speech when the victorious buddhas of the past, present, and future turn the wheels of dharma.
May I accomplish the bodhisattva's practice of entering the past, present, and future in a fraction of a second. May I enter all the future eons in a single instant.
May I behold all the heroic buddhas of the past, present, and future in a single instant. May I always perform their activities through the power of liberation from illusion.
May I perceive upon a single atom the perfect design of the pure realms of the past, present, and future. Thus may I enter into the realms of the victorious buddhas in all directions.
May the illuminators of the worlds of the future realize the stages of buddhahood, of turning the wheel, and of the profound peace of nirvana, and may I always be in their presence.
May I acquire the perfectly accomplished powers of enlightenment: the power of miraculous swiftness, the power of perfection of every spiritual path, the power of all virtuous qualities.
May I acquire the power of all-pervasive love, the power of the merit of every virtue, the power of all-transcendent wisdom, and the powers of perfect knowledge, method, and meditation.
May the power of action be utterly purified, the power of passions utterly subdued, the power of demons utterly destroyed, and the power of the deeds of Samantabhadra perfected.
May the ocean of lands be purified, the ocean of beings liberated, the ocean of Dharma realized, and the ocean of wisdom fully attained.
May the ocean of practice be purified and the oceans of aspirations accomplished. May the oceans of Buddhas be ceaselessly worshipped and the deeds of enlightenment tirelessly preformed.
May I completely fulfill all perfect aspirations to enlightned activities, in order to attain the stage of the victorious Buddhas of the past, present, and future according to the deeds of Samantabhadra.
The eldest son of the victorious buddhas is called Samantabhadra. I dedicate all these virtuous actions, that my deeds may be like his.
May my body, speech, mind, activities, and environment always be pure, and may I become equal to this excellent Aspiration of Samantabhadra. May I tirelessly accomplish the virtuous deeds of Samantabhadra and the aspirations of the bodhisattva Manjusri, throughout all future eons.
May there be no limit to my activities. May there be no limit to my virtues. Through limitless perserverance may I accomplish all miraculous deeds. The limit of living beings is like the limit of open space. May the limit of my aspirations be equal to the limit of their activities and passions.
Whoever offers to the victorious buddhas all the perfect joys of gods and men, and the infinite realms of the ten directions adorned with jewels, for as many eons as there are atoms in those realms, shall gain great merit.
But whoever hears this greatest dedication prayer and is inspired by faith to intensely desire supreme enlightenment, shall gain even higher and holier merit.
Whoever recites this Aspiration of Samantabhadra will never again endure hellish rebirth, will abandon all evil friends, and will soon behold the buddha of boundless light.
They will gain all benefits, live in happiness, attain precious human rebirth, and soon become like Samantabhadra himself.
Even those who in ignorance committed the five unredeemable sins, will soon be completely purified by reciting this Aspiration of Samantabhadra. They will achieve perfect wisdom, a radiant countenance, ethereal form, auspicious physical marks, and a noble birth. Profane and devilish beings will not trouble them, and they will be honored in the three realms.
They will quickly reach the royal tree of enlightenment, residing there to benefit all beings. As enlightened buddhas, they will turn the wheel of the dharma, taming the demonic hosts. Whoever knows, teaches, or recites this Aspiration of Samantabhadra, shall ultimately attain perfect buddhahood. May none despair of complete enlightenment.
In whatever way valiant Manjusri and Samantabhadra know how to transfer merit, so do I dedicate all of my own virtues, that I might train to be like them. Through this dedication, praised as supreme by the victorious Buddhas of the past, present, and future, I dedicate all of these roots of virtue to accomplishing the deeds of Samantabhadra.
At the moment of my death, may all obscurations be removed that I may behold the buddha of boundless light and go to the pure land of perfect bliss. In that blissful land, may I completely fulfill all of these aspirations, and benefit all beings as long as the universe remains.
Joyful there, in that blessed assembly of the buddhas, may I be reborn like the holy ones, from an exquisite lotus, and may the buddha amitabha himself foretell my own enlightenment.
May I thereafter accomplish countless benefits for living beings in all the ten directions, by the power of perfect wisdom in its myriad incarnations.
Through whatever small virtue I have gathered by reciting this Aspiration of Samantabhadra, may all the virtuous aspirations of living beings be accomplished in a single instant.
Through the boundless merit gained by so dedicating these Aspirations of Samantabhadra, may the countless beings drowning in the torrent of suffering reach the stage of amitabha.
May this greatest of dedication prayers benefit countless living beings. May reciting this ornament of samantabhadra release all beings from the sufferings of the lower realms.

Aspiration of Samantabhadra From the Tantra of the Great Perfection Which
Shows the Penetrating Wisdom of Samantabhadra, this is the ninth chapter,
which presents the powerful aspiration which makes it impossible for all
beings not to attain buddhahood. Translated by Lama Yeshe Gyamtso and The Dzogchen Ponlop, Rinpoche. HO All that appears and exists, all of samsara and nirvana, Has one ground, two paths and two results. It is the display of awareness and ignorance. Through the aspiration of Samantabhadra May all be fully awakened
In the citadel of the dharmadhatu. The ground of all is uncomposed, An inexpressible, self-arisen expanse Without the names "samsara" and "nirvana." If it is known, buddhahood is attained. Not knowing it, beings wander in samsara. May all beings of the three realms Know the inexpressible ground.
I, Samantabhadra Know naturally that ground Without cause and condition. I am without the defects of superimposition and denial of outer and inner. I am unobscured by the darkness of mindlessness. Therefore, self-appearance is unobscured. If self-awareness remains in place There is no fear even if the three-fold world is destroyed. There is no attachment to the five desirables. In self-arisen, non-conceptual awareness There is no solid form or five poisons.
The unceasing lucidity of awareness Is five wisdoms of one nature. Through the ripening of the five wisdoms The five families of the first buddha arose. From the further expansion of wisdom The forty-two buddhas arose. As the display of five wisdoms The sixty blood drinkers arose. Therefore, ground-awareness never became confused. As I am the first buddha,
Through my aspiration May beings of samsara's three realms Recognize self-arisen awareness And expand great wisdom.
My emanations are unceasing. I manifest inconceivable billions, Displayed as whatever tames beings. Through my compassionate aspiration May all beings of samsara's three realms Escape the six states.
At first, for bewildered beings Awareness did not arise on the ground. That obscurity of unconsciousness Is the cause of bewildered ignorance. From that unconsciousness Emerged terrified, blurry cognition. Self - other and enmity were born from that. Through the gradual intensification of habit Sequential entry into samsara began. The five poisonous kleshas developed. The actions of the five poisons are unceasing. Therefore, since the ground of the confusion of beings Is mindless ignorance,
Through the aspiration of myself, the buddha, May all recognize awareness.
The connate ignorance Is a distracted, mindless cognition. The labeling ignorance Is holding self and other to be two. The two ignorances, connate and labeling, Are the ground of the confusion of all beings. Through the aspiration of myself, the buddha, May the thick, mindless obscurity
Of all samsaric beings be dispelled. May dualistic cognition be clarified. May awareness be recognized. Dualism is doubt. From the emergence of subtle clinging Coarse habit gradually develops. Food, wealth, clothing, places, companions, The five desirables and beloved relatives -- Beings are tormented by attachment to the pleasant. That is mundane confusion. There is no end to the actions of dualism. When the fruit of clinging ripens, Born as pretas tormented by craving -- How sad is their hunger and thirst. Through the aspiration of myself, the buddha, May desirous beings
Not reject the longing of desire Nor accept the clinging of attachment. By relaxing cognition as it is May their awareness take its seat. May they attain the wisdom of discrimination.
Through the emergence of a subtle, fearful cognition Of externally apparent objects The habit of aversion grows. Coarse enmity, beating and killing are born. When the fruit of aversion ripens, How much suffering there is in hell through boiling and burning. Through the aspiration of myself, the buddha, When strong aversion arises In all beings of the six states, May it be relaxed without rejection or acceptance. Awareness taking its seat, May beings attain the wisdom of clarity.
One's mind becoming inflated, An attitude of superiority to others, Fierce pride, is born. One experiences the suffering of disputation. When the fruit of that action ripens One is born as a god and experiences death and downfall. Through the aspiration of myself, the buddha, May beings with inflated minds Relax cognition as it is. Awareness taking its seat, May they realize equality.
Through the habit of developed dualism, From the agony of praising oneself and denigrating others, Quarrelsome competitiveness develops. Born as an asura, killed and mutilated, One falls to hell as a result. Through the aspiration of myself, the buddha, May those who quarrel through competitiveness Relax their enmity. Awareness taking its seat, May they attain the wisdom of unimpeded activity.
Through the distraction of mindless apathy, Through torpor, obscurity, forgetfulness, Unconsciousness, laziness and bewilderment, One wanders as an unprotected animal as a result. Through the aspiration of myself, the buddha, May the light of lucid mindfulness arise In the obscurity of torpid bewilderment. May non-conceptual wisdom be attained.
All beings of the three realms Are equal to myself, the buddha, in the all-ground. It became the ground of mindless confusion. Now, they engage in pointless actions. The six actions are like the bewilderment of dreams. I am the first buddha. I tame the six types of beings through emanations. Through the aspiration of Samantabhadra, May all beings without exception
Be awakened in the dharmadhatu.
A HO: From now on whenever a powerful yogin Within lucid awareness without bewilderment Makes this powerful aspiration, All beings who hear it Will be fully awakened within three lives. When the sun or moon is grasped by Rahu, When there is clamor or earthquakes,
At the solstices or at the year's change, If he generates himself as Samantabhadra And recites this in the hearing of all, All beings of the three realms Will be gradually freed from suffering And will finally attain buddhahood Through the aspiration of that yogin.

Extraordinary Aspiration Of the Practice of Samantabhadra (The King of Prayers) Translated by Jesse Fenton 2002,
Seattle, Washington by request of her teacher, Venerable Thubten Chodron, relying on the commentary Ornament Clarifying the Exalted Intention of
Samantabhadra ('phags-pa bzang-po spyod-pa'i smon-lam gyi rnam-par bshad-pa
kun-tu-bzang-po'i dgongs-pa gsal-bar byed-pa'i rgyan) by lCang-skya
Rol-pa'i-rdo-rje, and on clarification of many difficult points by the very kind Khensur Rinpoche Konchog Tsering of Ganden Monastery. I bow down to the youthful Arya Manjushri.
You lions among humans, Gone to freedom in the present, past and future In the worlds of ten directions, To all of you, with body, speech and sincere mind I bow down.
With the energy of aspiration for the bodhisattva way, With a sense of deep respect, And with as many bodies as atoms of the world, To all you Buddhas visualized as real, I bow down.
On every atom are Buddhas numberless as atoms, Each amidst a host of bodhisattvas, And I am confident the sphere of all phenomena Is entirely filled with Buddhas in this way.
With infinite oceans of praise for you, And oceans of sound from the aspects of my voice, I sing the breathtaking excellence of Buddhas, And celebrate all of you Gone to Bliss.
Beautiful flowers and regal garlands, Sweet music, scented oils and parasols, Sparkling lights and sublime incense, I offer to you Victorious Ones.
Fine dress and fragrant perfumes, Sandalwood powder heaped high as Mount Meru, All wondrous offerings in spectacular array, I offer to you Victorious Ones.
With transcendent offerings peerless and vast, With profound admiration for all the Buddhas, With strength of conviction in the bodhisattva way, I offer and bow down to all Victorious Ones.
Every harmful action I have done With my body, speech and mind Overwhelmed by attachment, anger and confusion, All these I openly lay bare before you.
I lift up my heart and rejoice in all positive potential Of the Buddhas and bodhisattvas in ten directions, Of solitary realizers, hearers still training and those beyond,
And of all ordinary beings. You who are the bright lights of worlds in ten directions, Who have attained a Buddha's omniscience through the stages of awakening, All you who are my guides, Please turn the supreme wheel of Dharma.
With palms together I earnestly request: You who may actualize parinirvana, Please stay with us for eons numberless as atoms of the world, For the happiness and well-being of all wanderers in samsara.
Whatever slight positive potential I may have created, By paying homage, offering, and acknowledging my faults, Rejoicing, and requesting that the Buddhas stay and teach, I now dedicate all this for full awakening.
May you Buddhas now living in the worlds of ten directions, And all you gone to freedom in the past, accept my offerings. May those not yet arisen quickly perfect their minds, Awakening as fully enlightened ones.
May all worlds in ten directions, Be entirely pure and vast. May they be filled with bodhisattvas Surrounding Buddhas gathered beneath a bodhi tree.
May as many beings as exist in ten directions Be always well and happy. May all samsaric beings live in accord with the Dharma, And may their every Dharma wish be fulfilled.
Remembering my past lives in all varieties of existence, May I practice the bodhisattva way, And thus, in each cycle of death, migration and birth, May I always abandon the householder's life.
Then, following in the footsteps of all the Buddhas, And perfecting the practice of a bodhisattva, May I always act without error or compromise, With ethical discipline faultless and pure.
May I teach the Dharma in the language of gods, In every language of spirits and nagas, Of humans and of demons, And in the voice of every form of being.
May I be gentle-minded, cultivating the six
paramitas, And never forget bodhicitta. May I completely cleanse without omission Every negativity and all that obscures this awakening mind. May I traverse all my lives in the world, Free of karma, afflictions and interfering forces, Just as the lotus blossom is undisturbed by the water's wave, Just as the sun and moon move unhindered through the sky.
May I ease the suffering in the lower realms And in the many directions and dimensions of the universe. May I guide all wanderers in samsara to the pure bliss of awakening And be of worldly benefit to them as well. May I practice constantly for eons to come, Perfecting the activities of awakening, Acting in harmony with the various dispositions of beings, Showing the ways of a bodhisattva.
May I always have the friendship Of those whose path is like mine, And with body, words and also mind, May we practice together the same aspirations and activities. May I always meet a spiritual mentor And never displease that excellent friend, Who deeply wishes to help me And expertly teaches the bodhisattva way.
May I always directly see the Buddhas, Masters encircled by bodhisattvas, And without pause or discouragement for eons to come, May I make extensive offerings to them. May I hold within me the Buddha's genuine Dharma, Illuminate everywhere the teachings that awaken, Embody the realizations of a bodhisattva, And practice ardently in all future eons.
While circling through all states of existence, May I become an endless treasure of good qualities - Skillful means, wisdom, samadhi and liberating stabilizations- Gathering limitless pristine wisdom and positive potential. On one atom I shall see Buddha fields numberless as atoms, Inconceivable Buddhas among bodhisattvas in every field,
Practicing the activities of awakening.
Perceiving this in all directions, I dive into an ocean of Buddha fields, Each an ocean of three times Buddhas in the space of a wisp of hair. So I, too, will practice for an ocean of eons. Thus I am continually immersed in the speech of the Buddhas, Expression that reveals an ocean of qualities in one word, The completely pure eloquence of all the Buddhas, Communication suited to the varied tendencies of beings.
With strength of understanding I plunge Into the infinite enlightened speech of the Dharma Of all Buddhas in three times gone to freedom, Who continually turn the wheel of Dharma methods. I shall experience in one moment Such vast activity of all future eons, And I will enter into all eons of the three times, In but a fraction of a second.
In one instant I shall see all those awakened beings, Past, present and future lions among humans, And with the power of the illusion-like stabilization I will constantly engage in their inconceivable activity. I shall manifest upon one single atom The array of pure lands present, past and future. Likewise, I shall enter the array of pure Buddha fields
In every direction without exception.
I shall enter the very presence of all my guides, Those lights of this world who are yet to appear, Those sequentially turning the wheels of complete awakening, Those who reveal nirvana - final, perfect peace. May I achieve the power of swift, magical emanation, The power to lead to the great vehicle through every approach, The power of always beneficial activity, The power of love pervading all realms, The power of all surpassing positive potential, The power of supreme knowledge unobstructed by discrimination, And through the powers of wisdom, skillful means and samadhi, May I achieve the perfect power of awakening.
Purifying the power of all contaminated actions, Crushing the power of disturbing emotions at their root, Defusing the power of interfering forces, I shall perfect the power of the bodhisattva practice. May I purify an ocean of worlds, May I free an ocean of beings, May I clearly see an ocean of Dharma, May I realize an ocean of pristine wisdom.
May I purify an ocean of activities, May I fulfill an ocean of aspirations, May I make offerings to an ocean of Buddhas, May I practice without discouragement for an ocean of eons. To awaken fully through this bodhisattva way, I shall fulfill without exception All the diverse aspirations of the awakening practice Of all Buddhas gone to freedom in the three times everywhere.
In order to practice exactly as the wise one Called Samantabhadra, 'All Embracing Good', The elder brother of the sons and daughters of the Buddhas, I completely dedicate all this goodness. Likewise may I dedicate Just as the skillful Samantabhadra, With pure body, speech and mind, Pure actions and pure Buddha fields.
I shall give rise to the aspirations of Manjushri For this bodhisattva practice of all embracing good, To perfect these practices Without discouragement or pause in all future eons. May my pure activities be endless, My good qualities boundless, And through abiding in immeasurable activity, May I actualize infinite emanations.
Limitless is the end of space, Likewise, limitless are living beings, Thus, limitless are karma and afflictions. May my aspiration's reach be limitless as well. One may offer to the Buddhas All wealth and adornments of infinite worlds in ten directions, And one may offer during eons numberless as atoms of the world Even the greatest happiness of gods and humans;
But whoever hears this extraordinary aspiration, And longing for highest awakening Gives rise to faith just once, Creates far more precious positive potential. Those who make this heartfelt aspiration for the bodhisattva way Will be free of all lower rebirths, Free of harmful companions, And will quickly see Amitabha, Infinite Light.
And even in this very human life, They will be nourished by happiness and have all conducive circumstances. Without waiting long, They will become like Samantabhadra himself. Those who give voice to this extraordinary aspiration Will quickly and completely purify The five boundless harmful actions Created under the power of ignorance.
Blessed with supreme knowledge, Excellent body, family, attributes, and appearance, They will be invincible to vast interfering forces and misleading teachers, And all the three worlds will make offerings. Going quickly to the noble bodhi tree, And sitting there to benefit sentient beings, Subduing all interfering forces, They will fully awaken and turn the great wheel of Dharma
Have no doubt that complete awakening Is the fully ripened result - comprehended only by a Buddha - Of holding in mind by teaching, reading or reciting This aspiration of the bodhisattva practice. In order to train just like The hero Manjushri who knows reality as it is And just like Samantabhadra as well, I completely dedicate all this goodness, just as they did.
With that dedication which is praised as greatest By all the Buddhas gone to freedom in the three times, I, too, dedicate all my roots of goodness For the attainments of the bodhisattva practice. When the moment of my death arrives, By eliminating all obscurations And directly perceiving Amitabha, May I go immediately to Sukhavati, Pure Land of Great Joy.
Having gone to Sukhavati, May I actualize the meaning of these aspirations, Fulfilling them all without exception, For the benefit of beings for as long as this world endures. Born from an extremely beautiful, superlative lotus In this joyful land, the Buddha's magnificent mandala, May I receive a prediction of my awakening Directly from the Buddha Amitabha.
Having received a prediction there, May I create vast benefit For beings throughout the ten directions, With a billion emanations by the power of wisdom. Through even the small virtue I have accumulated By offering this prayer of the bodhisattva practice, May all the positive aspirations of beings Be fulfilled in an instant.
Through creating limitless positive potential By dedicating this prayer of Samantabhadra's deeds, May all beings drowning in this torrent of suffering, Enter the presence of Amitabha. Through this king of aspirations, which is the greatest of the sublime,
Helping infinite wanderers in samsara, Through the accomplishment of this scripture dazzling with Samantabhadra's
practice, May suffering realms be utterly emptied of all beings.
Thus, The
Extraordinary Aspiration of the Practice of Samantabhadra, also known as
The King of Prayers, from the Gandavyuha chapter of the Avatamsaka sutra (translated by Jinamitra, Surendrabodhi and Yeshes-sde circa 900c.e.), is
complete. The Tibetan was compared with the Sanskrit and revised by lotsawa Vairocana.
